The Untitled Space is pleased to present a group exhibition and public art series “Art4Equality x Life, Liberty & The Pursuit of Happiness” presented in collaboration with SaveArtSpace and Art4Equality. The two-part exhibition features an empowering public art series of 10 billboards each by different artists launching on September 21, 2020 in a variety of locations throughout New York City, to coincide with a gallery exhibition opening on Saturday, September 26, 2020 at The Untitled Space featuring the work of over 50 contemporary artists. Revolving around the theme of “Art4Equality x Life, Liberty & The Pursuit of Happiness” the public art series and group exhibition is curated by Indira Cesarine, founder of The Untitled Space and Art4Equality. The gallery will feature the unique artworks displayed on the billboards (presented by SaveArtSpace) along with an exhibition of many additional works in a variety of mediums including painting, drawing, photography, video, and sculpture inspired by the words “Equality,” “Life,” “Liberty,” and “The Pursuit of Happiness,” which will be on view at the gallery through November 3rd, and on Artsy through December 18, 2020. The Untitled Space is honored to collaborate with non-profit SaveArtSpace and support the programming of Art4Equality, an initiative that supports the creation of empowering equality themed exhibitions and public art.

Curatorial Statement:
“We live in an unprecedented time, our liberties robbed by a global pandemic, which laid painfully bare the inequities that have plagued the most vulnerable in our society for far too long. Political polarization in the United States is reaching critical mass with a divisive political system at war. Realities of social inequality and racial injustice are challenging our ability to have confidence in a promising future. With the 2020 elections approaching, I felt that it was a crucial time to create an opportunity for artists to respond, with the artwork presented in a public platform where it can reach an audience of millions of people every day and promote an inclusive dialogue. The billboard transformed into an art display is an innovative, and ultimately accessible way to present contemporary art, transforming spaces normally dedicated to advertising into public art that has power and impact.
We received such an overwhelming response to the exhibit opportunity, which was presented via an open call, that I expanded the project to include a gallery group exhibition featuring over 50 artists who created artworks inspired by the theme – most of which were created during quarantine. The public art series and exhibition “Art4Equality x Life, Liberty, & The Pursuit of Happiness” seeks to empower, enlighten, and shed a ray of hope in a city that has been under a dark cloud, in a country that is in tatters not only by an invisible virus, but also by political and civil unrest. As we navigate through this difficult time, “Art4Equality x Life, Liberty, & The Pursuit of Happiness” celebrates art as activism, giving voices to a diverse array of contemporary artists from all backgrounds, ages, and genders. I’m honored to guest curate the public art series for SaveArtSpace and hope viewers will be inspired and motivated by the public art billboards and exhibition artwork.”

Jodie Herrera uses symbolism from their culture and personal interests to visually narrate the painting and accompanies each piece with a write up that explains it in detail. She strives to celebrate the beauty and resilience of these women and hopes that they can provide inspiration for others.
Herrera’s ultimate goal is to connect and uplift women, while providing a platform for important issues around intersectional feminism and social justice. She specifically works with refugee and immigrant women to create paintings that illustrate their personal journeys. Herrera was awarded “Best Visual Artist of 2017, 2018 and 2019 by Albuquerque The Magazine, and her art has been featured in such settings as Art Archives of America in the Smithsonian Washington DC.

Panteha Abareshi was born in Montreal, Quebec. She integrates public engagement and interaction into her practice, holding great value in making the experience and discussion of contemporary art highly accessible- physically, emotionally and intellectually. As of August 2020, two of her pieces have been acquired by the Whitney Museum of Contemporary Art, in NYC.

Ashley Chew is a painter, model, activist & writer based in New York, NY. With a background in fine arts and career in fashion, she connects with clients on and off the runway.
Chew has been featured in Italian Vogue, American Vogue and many others. Milk.xyz has previously named Chew “Artist of The Week”. In 2016, PATTERN Magazine listed her one of “The 26 To Watch Under 26”, and My Domaine listed her as one of “10 Uplifting Artists To Follow on Instagram.”

Kim McCarty is a graduate of UCLA (MFA) and the Art Center College Design Pasadena (BFA). McCarty is known for her ethereal watercolors. Her work is included in the Museum of Modern Art, Honolulu Academy of Art and the Hammer Museum.

Donna Bassin is a photographer, film-maker, author, and practicing psychoanalyst. She feels the urgency for artistic recognition of the ruptures in our society and attempts towards repair.

Anne Barlinckhoff is an artist whose work is a study of the human body and our relationships. Artist Meg Lionel Murphy’s paintings are informed by debilitating PTSD from severe domestic violence. She works out of a little blue shack in a junkyard on her family’s property in Wisconsin, where she paints detailed, vivid works on paper and panel depicting heartbroken giants that magically grow larger, stronger, and scarier than the world around them.

Q’shaundra James was born in Las Vegas, Nevada and studied fine art and English at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Her work explores how the effects of microaggressions afflict African Americans—what an assault to racial identity and self-esteem looks like, but also the unknown reactions of self aware black portraits forced on display.

Alison Stinely was born and raised in Erie, Pennsylvania. She received her BFA from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and her MFA from Indiana University, Bloomington. She has also received many awards and honors and is a two time winner of the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant.

Osaze Stigler is a self-taught, mixed media artist from Atlanta, GA. His work encompasses layers of religious iconography and cultural trends between the African continent and the diaspora (traditional and current). He represents black people in ways that they can feel like comfort, beauty, abundance, and equity are accessible to us. His work was recently profiled by Beyoncé on her website.

Alexandra Rubinstein is a Brooklyn-based conceptual artist whose practice focuses on how culture, gender, and sexuality affect power. Reconstructing familiar and taboo images to create a new narrative, she challenges old social systems and prejudices. She has been featured in Huffington Post, Paper Magazine, Cosmopolitan, Forbes, GQ, and many others.

Tslil Tsemet was born in 1988 in Nahariya, a small town in Israel located next to the Lebanon border, defined as a War zone territory. Robyn Gibson is an emerging artist living and working in Brooklyn, New York. In 2018 she graduated with an MFA from the New York Academy of Art. Gibson claims ownership of her environment (both metaphorically and physically) through the act of taking up space and employing physical gestures. As a black artist focused on self-portraiture and the exploration of her own trauma, Gibson grapples with themes of black identity, the depiction, perception and value of black bodies, and what it means to be authentic.

In her latest series “True World Story” by Lola Jiblazee explored hope, love, and courage during the COVID-19 pandemic. Artwork features a portrait of Chanel, a frontline nurse for COVID-19 based in Seattle, Washington.

Michele Pred is a Swedish American conceptual artist whose practice includes sculpture, assemblage, and performance. Hana Zhang (China) is a visual artist, filmmaker and writer in Brooklyn. Rosemary Meza-DesPlas currently lives in Farmington, New Mexico. The cornerstone of her artwork is the female experience within a patriarchal society. Through on-site drawing installations and watercolor paintings, Meza-DesPlas evokes intellectual and visceral responses to socio-cultural burdens endured by women; these burdens and their subsequent impact on contemporary culture are interpreted through a global lens.

Watercolor artist Fahren Feingold imparts an ethereal quality to her unique works depicting the female form. Her watercolors featuring bold feminine figures reference imagery from early 20th century French photography, vintage American magazines from the 70s and 80s, and today’s Internet girls.

Linda Friedman Schmidt is a self-taught artist known for her emotional narrative portraits created from discarded clothing. She was born stateless in a German displaced persons camp, the first child of Holocaust survivors who discouraged her interest in art. In artwork filtered through a postwar immigrant childhood, she fuses a traumatic personal history with present day social, cultural, political, and feminist issues.

Karen Bystedt is an internationally acclaimed, highly prolific photographer and mixed media artist currently based in Los Angeles. Rebecca Bird works in painting, printmaking, animation and creates large scale painted installations. Leah Schrager is a digital artist and online performer. She is the model, photographer, artist, and marketer in/of her images. Her visual works apply a painterly aesthetic to bodily forms and often draw their material from her conceptual online practice. Schrager’s artwork is situated in a contemporary hotbed of female (in)appropriateness, arousal, celebrity, fandom, and commercialism that seeks to explore female biography and labor in today’s global society.

Katya Zvereva was born in Saint Petersburg, Russia in 1990. She received her Master’s Degree of Architecture from the V. Surikov Moscow State Academy Art Institute in 2013, and her Masters of Fine Art from New York Academy of Art in 2016.
Her work crosses over into many mediums, from painting, printmaking, drawing, and sculpture, to explorations with object d’art and furniture. In printmaking, she has developed her own unique technique based on monotypes mixed with drawing, which she often prints on multiple layers of fabric or hand-made paper.

Vaughan Larsen is a Milwaukee-based artist who received a BFA with an emphasis in Photography and Imaging from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in May 2019. Later that year, Larsen earned first place in the Creative Bursary Global LGBTQ+ Stories by Getty Images, first prize in the Unique competition of the Amsterdam Pride Photo Award, and was named an Emerging Fellow of the Milwaukee Foundation Mary L. Nohl Fellowship.

Indira Cesarine is a Mexican American multidisciplinary artist who works with photography, video, painting, printmaking, and sculpture. Her work as an artist has been featured internationally at many art galleries, museums, and art fairs, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Aside from her work as a visual artist, she is the founder and editor-in-chief of The Untitled Magazine, founder of The Untitled Space art gallery, as well as founder of Art4Equality, an initiative supporting equality themed art exhibitions and special projects including films and public art by female identifying artists and allies.

Images from the exhibit opening reception at The Untitled Space on September 26th. The exhibtion will be on view at the gallery through November 3rd, 2020.
