Gwendoline Finaz de Villaine
Gwendoline Finaz de Villaine is a dynamic French artist known for her multidisciplinary talents as a painter, singer, and writer. Her artistic journey is deeply influenced by her background as a musical performer, surrealism, and Asian art. Passionate about exploring the intersection of Eastern and Western traditions, she developed her signature "Caviar Ink" technique in 2019, a unique pointillist method combining small, spidery circles with mineral and organic motifs. Inspired by Yakuza tattoos, her work integrates mysterious symbols such as swimmers, dancers, and doves to explore the mystical connections between the visible and invisible. For Gwendoline, the connection between her art and the urban environment is essential, believing that art belongs in public spaces, not confined to galleries or salons. Gwendoline’s commitment to bringing art to the streets extends to her wearable art collections, which transform her paintings into fashion pieces that redefine luxury as personal, sustainable, and artistic. Her collaboration with The Untitled Boutique highlights her belief in the democratization of art through fashion.
A former student of Maîtrise Radio France, Sciences Po Paris, and HEC, Gwendoline’s creative portfolio extends beyond visual art. As a singer, she has performed at prestigious venues such as the Folies Bergère and the Zénith, and collaborated with notable artists including Michel Fugain and Jean-Claude Camus. She has also authored the three-volume saga “Les Brumes de Grandville” and the novel “De Poudre, de Cendre et d’Or” (2019).
In addition to her studio practice, Gwendoline has created monumental works such as a fresco at Sorbonne Universités to raise awareness of student food insecurity and a commemorative mural for HEC Paris’s 140th anniversary. Her international exhibitions include solo shows at The Untitled Space gallery in New York and Ellia Art Gallery in Paris, as well as group shows at venues like the Grand Palais and the Sichuan Art Museum. In 2023, she represented France at the Sichuan Art Museum as part of a prestigious cultural exchange, and in 2024, she unveiled “The Hanging Garden” at the Lycée Français de New York, a fresco crafted with recycled materials in collaboration with students.
Gwendoline Finaz de Villaine continues to leave a distinctive mark on the contemporary art world with her innovative techniques, public art projects, and wearable art creations.
“The only thing I’m convinced of is that Art shouldn’t be confined to galleries and salons. Painting isn’t there to look pretty and sit quietly in a corner. Art has to take the streets by storm,” she says.
