July 9 – September 30, 2025

The Untitled Space is pleased to present “Enchanted Visions,” a selection of paintings by artist Kristy Gordon on view now on Artsy. In her practice, New York-based painter Kristy Gordon explores how magic, mysticism, and mythologies inform our lived reality. Her paintings have been described as “contradictory and enigmatic scenes (that) unravel centuries of power relations and imagine a new future.” Her work has been exhibited internationally, including in exhibitions at the European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM) in Barcelona and the National Academy Museum in New York City. Gordon earned her BFA from OCAD University (2011) and MFA from the New York Academy of Art (2013), where she now teaches as an adjunct professor. She is a three-time recipient of the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant, and her paintings have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. Her work has appeared in Hyperallergic, Vogue, and Fine Art Connoisseur, among others. Her paintings are held in over 600 private and public collections worldwide, including the Government of Ontario Art Collection, The Clearing House (New York City), and the Touchstones Nelson Museum of Art and History.

Artist Statement:
“My practice explores how magic, mysticism, and mythologies inform our lived reality. By engaging with esoterica, I pay homage to a long history of women and other non-dominant groups who have used magic as a strategy of creative resistance. In my work, I refer to myriad global belief systems and their understanding of what lays beyond the visible world. I depict a multiverse where boundaries between past, present, real, and mythic are indistinct, and recognizably contemporary figures commingle with settings and beings from other times. Likewise, the layered nature of reality in my paintings can be understood as facets of consciousness, ranging from everyday cognition to the deeper recesses of the unconscious mind.
I am invested in the power of world-building to speculate on alternatives to the familiar, rationalist environment that we navigate daily. In my paintings, I’ve constructed a universe interspersed with humans, plants, non-human animals, cyborgs, shape shifters, goddesses, and other beautiful monsters. Abstract patterns that appear in my work derive from the cross-cultural study of sacred geometries, and they illuminate an inner landscape of the mind. I also adapt motifs from the visual culture of ancient civilizations. These motifs often take the form of doors or gateways, which are both physical and psychic passages to other dimensions where spirits move freely. The invocation of the distant past in my work alludes to the cyclical nature of time. Ultimately, I aim to build a new folklore capable of describing the vast complexity of our contemporary moment.” – Kristy Gordon
