Rose McGowan

Rose (Rósa) McGowan is an actress, activist, author, and multidisciplinary artist whose work delves into themes of authenticity, emotional truth, and resistance. Living and working in the Yucatán Peninsula, her art is deeply rooted in personal reflection, blending elements of nature, projected light, and color fields to create immersive, multisensory experiences. McGowan’s creative process explores the dualities of softness and strength, often using nature as a central motif. Her art not only captures vulnerability and resilience but also challenges cultural norms and preconceived notions of identity. McGowan's pieces evoke a sense of both introspection and power, which has led to her participation in significant exhibitions such as UPRISE/ANGRY WOMEN (2017) and UPRISE 2025: The Art of Resistance at The Untitled Space, where she continues to use her work as a tool for self-expression.

In addition to her work as an artist, McGowan is an accomplished actress and activist, known for her groundbreaking role in The Doom Generation (1995), where she earned an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Debut Performance. She gained widespread recognition for her iconic portrayal in Scream (1996) and her role as Paige Matthews in the popular TV series Charmed (2001–2006). McGowan has also starred in Grindhouse (2007), for which she was nominated for multiple acting awards, including the Saturn Award for Best Actress.

McGowan’s activism and commitment to social change have been integral to her career. In 2017, she was recognized by Time as one of the Silence Breakers for her role in speaking out against sexual abuse and harassment in Hollywood, helping ignite the global #MeToo movement. Her memoir BRAVE and the docuseries Citizen Rose (2018) further cemented her as a powerful and unapologetic voice for justice. McGowan’s activism also extends to her support for LGBTQ+ rights, as seen in her campaign against California’s Proposition 8 in 2008.

As an artist, McGowan continues to push boundaries, challenging societal expectations and encouraging others to reclaim their narratives. Her work across various mediums—visual art, music, and performance—remains rooted in her quest for truth, freedom, and creative autonomy. With her music project Planet 9, McGowan explores sonic art through healing frequencies, further expanding her artistic exploration of selfhood and transformation. Through her artistic and political endeavors, McGowan continues to challenge cultural norms, advocating for personal and collective freedom.
