In addition to her work as an artist, McGowan is an accomplished actress and activist, known for her groundbreaking role in The Doom Generation (1995), where she earned an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Debut Performance. She gained widespread recognition for her iconic portrayal in Scream (1996) and her role as Paige Matthews in the popular TV series Charmed (2001–2006). McGowan has also starred in Grindhouse (2007), for which she was nominated for multiple acting awards, including the Saturn Award for Best Actress.

McGowan’s activism and commitment to social change have been integral to her career. In 2017, she was recognized by Time as one of the Silence Breakers for her role in speaking out against sexual abuse and harassment in Hollywood, helping ignite the global #MeToo movement. Her memoir BRAVE and the docuseries Citizen Rose (2018) further cemented her as a powerful and unapologetic voice for justice.
